SAG: Arunachal’s Sambo scripts history
ITANAGAR, Feb 07: Lifter Sambo Lapung of Arunachal Pradesh today scripted history by winning a gold medal for India in the 12th South Asian Games (SAG) being held in Guwahati.
Sambo, living upto expectations, bagged the gold medal in 69 kg category in his maiden appearance in the SAG. He defeated his nearest Sri Lankan rival M Disanayake in a close contest, informed Arunachal Weightlifting Association (AWA).
After trailing by 5 kg in snatch, Sambo lifted five more kilograms than his Sri Lankan rival in clean and jerk, leaving the two lifters tied on a total lift of 281kg. Sambo lifted 123 kg in snatch and 158 kg in clean and jerk.
The lifter from the state was adjudged the gold winner as his bodyweight (68.8 kg) was lesser than Disanayake (69.00 kg), who won the silver, the AWA release said.
Sambo is the lone athlete from the state to represent the country in the Games.
Compatriot Saraswati Rout brought the first gold of the day in Women’s 58 kg with a total lift of 187 kg (snatch: 80 kg + clean and jerk: 107 kg).
With Sambo and Saraswati winning one gold medal each on the second day till filing of this report, the country’s total medal haul from weightlifting in the games rose to five.
The silver and bronze medals in this category went to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Sambo is the current senior national weightlifting champion in 69 kg category. He won the title in the 68th Senior National Weightlifting Championship held at Patiala, Punjab in December 2015.
In international level, Sambo has won a silver medal at Commonwealth Youth Championship in Apia, Samoa in 2012. He became Asian Youth Champion as well as Commonwealth Youth Champion in 2013. The Asian title was achieved in the 15th Asian Youth Weightlifting Championship held in Doha, Qatar and the Commonwealth title in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship held in Penang, Malaysia.
It is pertinent to mention here that Sambo along with Jimjang Deru and Kojum Taba, are attending a two and half months national coaching camp at SAI, Netaji Subash National Institute of Sports, Patiala, Punjab as a preparation for various International Senior Weightlifting Championship, including 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, messages congratulating Sambo for his stupendous performance in the Games started to pour in from all quarters.
Thrilled by the achievement of the lifter from the state in the SAG, Governor JP Rajkhowa said that Lapung has truly showcased the sporting potential of the State and the region.
The Governor, who reposed confidence on the potentials of young men and women of the state, hoped Sambo’s achievement will inspire many more youths of the state towards games and sports.
“It is a great moment for all of us. By bagging Gold in the Games through his sheer determination and hard work, Sambo has made the state and country proud,” said Arunachal Olympic Association Secretary General Gechi Doke.
“The initiative of former chief minister Nabam Tuki, who accorded top priority to sports sector, started to bear fruits,” said the AOA secretary general.

“We are making all out efforts to provide the required training and practice to meet their expectations,” Abraham, also Indian Weightlifting Federation vice president, said.
“Our weightlifters would undoubtedly excel for winning much more glory for India and we are confident about that,” Abraham added.
Young Arunachalee scientists shine at Taiwan International Science Fair
ITANAGAR, Feb 07: Four girl students from Arunachal have secured the 3rd position
at the Taiwan International Science Fair, which was held from Jan 24-
VKV Nirjuli students Lishank Tasar (Class VII) and Tadar Parte (Class VIII), presented a “Study on Traditional House Architecture in Itanagar Capital Complex and to improve climatic responsive contemporary house” while VKV Jirdin Aalo students, Toyir Kamgo and Zarnie Lollen, (both class VIII students), made their presentation on “Impact of firewood collection on weather & Climate of Jirdin village, Aalo”.
The four were awarded medal, citations and cash prize of 3200 dollars.
153 projects were presented in the event which saw the participation of 513 young scientists from 22 countries.
The selection process was a tedious one with scrutiny of projects at districts and then at the state Level by State Council for Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology and finally at National Children Science Congress held at Bangalore and Chandigarh, sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
The students were under the guidance of Director cum Member Secretary State Council for Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology, Er.Tanya Ronya and State Coordinator, Children Science Congress Dr Debojit Mahanta.
Ronya has congratulated the students for the stupendous performance and thanked Chief Secretary Ramesh Negi for his interest in the innovation and Science activities relevant to the need of the state.
Raj Bhavan seeks opinion on role of Deputy Speaker, Congress cries foul
NEW DELHI, Feb 07: In an interesting turn of events, Raj Bhavan has sought the opinion of the Secretary Law based on a letter written by T N Thongdok, asking if he can function as Deputy Speaker performing the duties of Speaker when President's Rule is in place in the state.
In a letter to Secretary Law written on Feb 4, Raj Bhavan has asked the details to be furnished by Feb 5 for the “perusal of the Governor”, taking many by surprise at the urgency shown.
Meanwhile, the Nabam Tuki led Congress has been quick in accusing Governor J P Rajkhowa of conspiring to help the dissident MLAs form a government with the support of BJP without waiting for a decision of the Supreme Court which is hearing petitions challenging imposition of President's rule in the state.
Geetartha Darshan Barua, spokesperson for CLP leader and deposed Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, said "We have contended that the Governor is guided by malafide intention and he had taken all decisions keeping in mind vested interests. The Deputy Speaker's letter to the Governor reflects the nexus between the two. Their final aim is to lodge a government with the help of BJP without waiting for the Supreme Court order," Barua alleged. In his letter, Thongdok has contended that although a five member Constitution Bench is hearing matters related to the session held on December 16 and 17, 2015, the Speaker's office is vacant as per the Gauhati High Court order dated January 13, 2016.
The Supreme Court, which is considering pleas against imposition of President's rule in Arunachal Pradesh, is hearing on petitions seeking examination of constitutional schemes on the scope of discretionary powers of the Governor. (With inputs from PTI)
Unending fire woes

For many years now, fire accidents have become major cause of concern, particularly during winter and spring seasons, in many parts of Arunachal Pradesh.
One can easily imagine the horror that the villagers of Lazu in Tirap district had faced at the dawn of this year as the fire devoured 38 houses causing damages to properties worth crores.
This year, so far four persons have lost their lives in the fire mishaps within state Capital alone.
Though East Siang has been witnessing increasing incidents of fire mishap for the last many years, fire is also a menace in some parts of Papum Pare, Upper Subansiri, Lower Subansiri, West Siang, East Kameng, West Kameng and Lohit districts causing human sufferings as well as huge loss of hard earned properties, shelters and sometimes human lives.
Gradual changing of lifestyle with modern utilities for a comfortable living has made our homes extremely prone to fire. With defective electric wiring, short circuit in the electrical equipments, open flame in the makeshift places of worship inside the houses, unattended fire in traditional houses, gas leak, we are living with the danger of fire at all times.
However, in villages of Arunachal Pradesh, where most of the dwelling houses are made of bamboo and toko patta (leaves), defective electric wiring and burning of fire wood in middle of the house round the clock without proper care are believed to be main causes of the fire accidents.
When the winter and spring descend, the Govt authorities, sometimes, appear with its usual advertisement about do and don’ts to prevent fire mishap, but in reality nothing much is done. Such awareness through news paper seems to be futile exercise while the fire mishaps are rapidly on an increasing trend everywhere in the state.
And the dreaded forest fires are a massive problem in itself. Come March-
On the other hand, most of the time, fire victims and locals do complain of late arrival of fire tenders at the site of fire accident. By the time fire tenders reach the scene, the victim losses all chances of preventing fire and saving properties.
Regrettably, in many populated important administrative circles, there is no fire service station and in most of the villages and sectors in town area of the state, chances are huge that help from fire service authority won’t arrive on time as there is no access due to narrow road or no road.
The Govt should provide sufficient fund to the fire service authority of the state for long term strategy to minimize the fire mishap and to equip itself with modern utilities to fight the fire.
At the same time, the fire service authority in collaboration with other departments
like education and health should play vigorous role in educating the citizens about
fire safety norms. It is also duty of the RWD and PWD to think twice while constructing
roads in villages, sectors and colonies so that fire tender reach the destination
on time in case of fire accident. The authorities may also explore the feasibility
of revamping the Lamkang -
Experts say, fire, once it begins to burn, takes only 6 minutes to transform into untamed blaze to devour everything. In the given situation, only awareness and precaution is the best solution to prevent fire accident.
Committee to investigate fire mishaps
ITANAGAR, Feb 07: Governor JP Rajkhowa has instructed concern authority for setting up of a high level committee to conduct a detailed investigation of fire accidents in various parts of the state and recommend measures to mitigate such fire mishaps which have become nightmare for many.
While expressing shock and grief over death of a student Ganga Subba in the fire accident of Nyokum Lapang, the Governor appealed to the people to take extra care and precautions while handling fire, gas cylinder, fire place etc, to avoid fire accidents.
He emphasized on creating awareness on fire prevention and safety tips by gas marketing agencies and also by the State Fire Department, reports PRO to Raj Bhawan.
Meanwhile, Arunachal Gorkha Youth Welfare Association has appealed to the City Police to conduct a thorough investigation to unearth the truth behind the death of Subba in the fire accident.
But there is no respite from house fire in Arunachal as reports of fire accidents destroying dwelling houses and also involving deaths in some cases, continues to pour in.

Rajkhowa dissatisfied with State Guest House facilities
ITANAGAR, Feb 07: Governor of Arunachal Pradesh JP Rajkhowa said that he was not satisfied at all with the arrangements made so far in the State Guest House in Khanapara, Guwahati. The Governor, who is currently in Guwahati on an official tour, today visited the guest house, the renovation works of which is going on.
He asked for expediting the renovation works, and complete it within a time frame with all required facilities.
The Governor directed the concern officials for regular inspection and monitoring of the works. Details should be sent to Raj Bhavan regularly; Rajkhowa said and assured all assistance to address the bottlenecks in progress of the project.
Later, the Governor also visited the Deputy Resident Commissioner's Office, Guwahati and found it in a very shabby condition. He was surprised to see the basic electrical fittings missing, giving excuse of paucity of fund. He directed the DRC to refurbish the office immediately. One nabbed in looting case
ITANAGAR, Feb 07: A cash amount of Rs five lacs has been looted from one Austim Muang of Pasighat by the miscreants at North Lakhimpur yesterday, informed Education Secretary Reedeep Jack Doley of Takam Mising Poring Kebang (All Mising Students' Union) in a release today.
A team of North Lakhimpur Police led by S.I Suraj Doley with the help of the members of TMPK conducted a search operation and apprehended the main accused identified as Noor Mohammad alias Rajiv Sharma Engineer of Bangalmara, Laluk today and recovered an amount of Rs One lakh fifty thousand from his possession, the release said adding the remaining amount will be recovered soon. However, hideouts of the remaining accused are not known till filing of this report.
North Lakhimpur district TMPK president Robin Doley also extended cooperation in recovering the amount and apprehending one of the culprits.

‘Clean Arunachal' campaign gaining momentum

PASIGHAT, Feb 07: Clean Arunachal campaign, which was launched in East Siang district on February 3, reached Mebo town today.
Local residents, including government officials, students, teachers, gaon burahs, were seen taking part in the ongoing cleanliness campaign actively.
Mebo ADC Yemlin Tayeng informed that his team today cleaned up the Mebo town collecting and disposing all garbage and polythene in and around the township.
East Siang Deputy Commissioner Isha Khosla in a statement lauded the team efforts and urged the people to always maintain cleanliness in order to live in a healthy and hygienic atmosphere.
Sources from Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) said that a mass cleanliness drive will be carried out in the township on account of Statehood Day due on February 20.

Fees without parking lot
Dear Editor,
As far as I am know, one of the function of Municipal is to clean and clear the street to make it garbage free and to reduce traffic chaos but I did not see anywhere in India that the Municipal collects Fees for parking the vehicles in the National Highway which is absurd. I’ve been to metropolitan Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, etc. and nowhere have I found collecting parking fees in the National Highway. They do but in certain places such as shopping Malls, private market areas where they had installed parking lots.
My friend told me once, “Assam is a rich state with poor people and Arunachal is a poor state with rich people”. The other people use their resources tactfully while ours waste it like there’s no tomorrow plus desire to earn Lakhs in a minute.
This attitude is not limited to any individual rather had extended its hands to Unions,
Associations, Cooperation, etc. The difference between others and ours is that despite
privileging parking areas, they take Rs.2 or 5/vehicle but ours as expected, charge
Rs.10-
I would ask the Municipal Officials, where are your Parking Lots? Why Rs.20? What’s
the problem to start from Rs.5/vehicle? Is there no jam in traffic flow now than
before or is the same as before? Any decision taken by the Municipal officials affects

5, 2016) , ‘India has been deeply shamed by what happened at Bengaluru a few days

Collective effort
Dear Editor,
Cleanliness is a grey area in India and we do not maintain any discipline in cleanliness.
Occasional participation in cleanliness drives will not make the state any cleaner.
Self discipline and attitudinal changes from us only can change. All the municipalities
and corporations must be held accountable for keeping the areas under their jurisdiction

More public toilet should be provided and garbage bins should be placed at the corner of the road. Fines should be imposed on violations. All schools, colleges & local bodies should be encouraged to participate in cleanliness crusade.

Dear Editor,
First of I would like to congratulate Jhon Libang and his friends who took help of the court and dared to fight against the misdeed of department of Secondary Education who tried to recruit PGT and TGT in spite of knowing that the concerned department has no authority to do so.
It is lesson to those officials who think that they can break norms.
They have done good job and every unemployed youth of the state appreciate them. Actually this job should have been done by the student union. But our students have no time for such work rather they are busy in playing politics. That’s why slowly parents and guardian have started to ask their children not to participate in any student union activities.
The corrupt officials and politicians forget that time has changed and public of Arunachal are now well aware and ready to fight against any kind of injustice. Besides court are there to help.
Now it is clear that recruitment of PGT and TGT will done by APPSC, I appeal to commission to start the recruitment process soon.

Salary and promotion
Dear Editor,
A government employee keeps going for two things, salary and promotion. But sadly, these two are becoming distant dreams.
A group of Junior Engineers were appointed in 2003 in PHE & WS Department.
Since the last thirteen years, they had been serving the department with utmost sincerity and dedication playing their role silently in building the state.
As their turn for promotion neared, their spirits were high. But the government had
other plans. Three Junior Engineers gets promoted to Assistant Engineer (functional)
